‘Save my daughter!’ Mother of acid victim cries out

Mrs Rose Gabriel, of a divorce-seeking woman, Anwulika Chinwuba whose head, some part of body was damaged by a liquid substance suspected to be acid splashed on her by her estranged husband on Wednesday has cried out for help to .

Mrs. Gabriel, who was attending to her wounded at the surgical section of Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku-Awka, Anambra state, told Orient Weekend that her concern was how to quickly restore ’s body so that she could move on with her life.

Unable to bear the sight of her , who could not speak to press due to severe damage the substance caused on her writhing in pains on the hospital bed, Mrs. Gabriel appealed for urgent financial assistance to enable her undergo necessary surgical operations.

“Our concern now is how to get rid of the damages done to her body… and we don’t have the money for the treatment and operations. We need help from government and people to her”, she appealed, disclosing that her family was poor and had been unable to afford funeral of her late husband, who died on February 21, 2019, and whose corpse was still in the mortuary.

Mrs Chinwuba, an Onitsha based hairdresser from Mmiata-Anam in Anambra West Local Council Area of Anambra state was splashed with a flesh-burning substance on Wednesday by her husband, Mr. Onyeachonam Chinwuba, as she made her way out of the premises of the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center at Agu-Awka in the state capital.

Orient Weekend gathered that Anwulika, of two, had dragged her husband, a civil servant, to the Anambra state Children and Women Affairs, seeking for divorce from the marriage. According to a statement credited to the state commissioner for Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, the victim wanted dissolution of the marriage over her husband’s alleged questionable lifestyle.

As part of the move to resolve the marital squabbles, the estranged couple reported at the ministry on Tuesday and Wednesday where their differences were thought to have been resolved. However, the dispute took a tragic twist shortly after the couple left the premises of the ministry.

According to eyewitness, the husband allegedly reached for a bottle containing the harmful substance, which he hid in his clothes, and splashed it on the victim, causing serious burns on her face down to her body.

“As she raised alarm, staffs of the ministry and others around rushed to help and eventually drove her to Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, where she was quickly admitted.

Confirming admission of Mrs Chinwuba in the hospital, the Public Relations Officer of COOUTH, Miss Henrietta Agbai, said that the state government was aware of the incident, and advised spouse to always settle their family issues amicably rather than taking laws into their hands. On his part, the Anambra state Police Command, through the PPRO, Haruna Muhammed, said the suspect has been arrested by men of the Nigerian Police, B-Division, Awka, and would soon be charged to court.
