It was a black Tuesday in Alesa Community, Eleme, Rivers state, as the residents of the area were stirred up from sleep at about 1 a.m to the scream of a woman who alleged that her husband had killed their four children, set their home ablaze and hanged himself.
The neighbours had to help contain the fire and invite the police. When the partly burnt apartment was entered, the bodies of the four children between the ages of 4 and 9 were found lying lifeless on the ground while that of the man was found hanging on a rope tied to the ceiling..
According to the woman, the suspect, whose name is yet to be disclosed, hailed from Ogoja town in Cross River state, but resided in a two-room apartment in Alesa community in Eleme Town with his four kids
“He had been moody for days and when we went to bed, he remained awake and was pacing about the house. Then, suddenly, he went over to where the children were sleeping and strangled them to death.
“When he came for me, I ran out of the house. He then went and set his room on fire after which he hanged himself,” the woman narrated. She said that she had not provoked him in anyway but had been suspecting that her late husband exhibited symptoms of mental illness. Delta state police officers who came to the scene removed the bodies to conduct autopsy on them while the woman was taken away for questioning. The house was also cordoned off by the police to prevent looters from exploiting the situation.
As at the time of file of report, the Delta state police public relations officer could not be reached for police comments on the incident.
