A man simply identified as Anthony has escaped being lynched for allegedly burying his two-year-old daughter, Christaiana, alive inside his family home at Okwerike village, Abaomege in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi state.
Orient Weekend learnt that the victim, the second child of her mother, suffered the cruel fate shortly after her mother left her under the care of the husband, at home on debt-drawing mission.
A source from the community, Christian Nwafor, told this paper that, shortly after the mother left home, the father quickly dug a shallow grave, seized the child and buried her for yet-unknown reasons. According to him, when the woman returned, she discovered a freshly dug spot in their compound. On inquiring from her husband, she noticed that he was trying to escape to a neighboring community in Cross River state.
Hear him: “Mr. Anthony’s wife left home to draw a debt from somebody who was owing her. She left her baby her husband. When the woman came back, she saw the husband trying to run away from home. She also observed a spot freshly dug by the man. Meanwhile, he was trying to run away to Cross River state. People came around to kill him but he was rescued from mob action by the police.
“When they discovered where the child was buried, the child was exhumed from the grave and sand was found in the baby’s mouth and it was discovered that the child died forcefully because when they brought her out excreta was found the baby’s anus.”
Nwafor adds that the suspect simply claimed that “he was tempted to kill his baby”.
Confirming the incident, Ebonyi state command police public relations officer, Loveth Odah, told Orient Daily that, “One Onyema Ogbugo from Okwerike village of Abaomege in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi state went to the station and reported that one Anthony of the same address unlawfully killed his own two-year-old female child. He killed her for no just cause and buried her alive in his compound inside the yam barn. The body of the baby has been deposited in the mortuary to be released to her parents after autopsy “, she said.
