As the national convention of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, draws closer, youth group of the party under the auspices of APGA Youth Movement for Victor Oye, has endorsed the national chairman of the party, Ozomkpu Victor Ike Oye, for second tenure.
In a get together held at the chairman’s country home in Amawbia, Anambra state, at the weekend, the group, led by its chairman, Hon. Ugochukwu Nwimo; and the national youth leader of APGA, Anselm Chinedu Nebife; also presented a cash sum of N500,000 to support the national chairman in the procurement of chairmanship form.
In his opening remark at the event, one of the leaders of the group, Hon. Leo Nwuba, noted that their action was propelled by transformational leadership style of the national chairman of the party, Chief Oye, which he said, has helped to take the party to enviable height.
“Today, these youths of our dear party, APGA, have come to beg you to continue to pilot the affairs of this party beyond 2019 by aspiring for second tenure as national chairman, so that you will consolidate in your past achievements.
“National chairman, sir, since you assumed office, you have transformed this party and have lifted it to a very high level. Today, APGA is the third biggest political party in Nigeria. You have rebranded the party; and we shall be happy to have you at the helm of affairs beyond June, 2019, after the coming convention of our party,” Hon. Nwuba, who is also the Transition Chairman, Awka South local government area of Anambra state, said.
Also in his remarks, the national youth leader of the party, Anselm Chinedu Nebife, described the national chairman as an uncommon leader.
According to him, “You are an uncommon leader. None of the previous chairmen before you has done as much as you’ve done to place our party to a very high pedestal. Now that we have the privilege of having a person like you at the helm of affairs, we shall do everything humanly possible and legally acceptable to make sure we do not lose you through the antics of enemies of progress,” he said, adding that Oye, since assumption of office, has been on the side of youths.
He added, “Before your emergence as chairman, APGA has very little in its coffers, but today, under your leadership, our party has more than enough to pay its bills. Again, before now, APGA has only 3 House of Reps members at the green chambers, but today, under you, APGA has 9 members.
“Sir, it is under your leadership that APGA won governorship election 100 percent for the first time in Anambra. It is under you that APGA won a senatorial election for the first time. We beg you, sir, for the interest of our dear party, to re-contest for the position of national chairman of this party. We believe that before you finish your second tenure, APGA shall have been transformed beyond imagination; and the party shall have made inroad into northern and western states, winning governorship elections, among other prominent positions.”
Another prominent member of the group, Ferdinand Onwuje, who is also the Transition Chairman, Awka North local government area of Anambra state, described Oye as a leader, who places God and excellence above every other thing.
“This group decided to procure chairmanship form for Ozomkpu Victor Oye, not because he cannot afford it himself. We want to persuade him to vie for second tenure. Coming for a second tenure is just for the interest of our dear party. Our national chairman can, as well, decide to face his businesses in lieu of his present position. So, we come to plead with him and tell him the need for him to continue beyond 2019,” he said.
Also speaking, other members of the group, Prince Ikechukwu Ndigwe, Eucharia Nwachukwu and Hon. Alex Osaka (Secretary General, APGA Youth Movement for Victor Oye), said that Oye has been piloting the affairs of the party with great enthusiasm and passion, not minding distractions from some quarters.
The trio, who spoke separately with our reporter, noted that Oye has set precedence worthy of emulation, and should be encouraged to continue. The noted that the group has, as well, started sensitisation and advocacy among groups that will vote during the convention, as ways of galvanising support for him.
Earlier in his address at the event, chairman of the group, Hon. Ugochukwu Nwimo, described Oye as a light to the party. He said their endorsement was to encourage Oye to go for second tenure and to assure him of the support of APGA youths.
In his response, the elated national chairman, Oye, commended the group for its gesture; assuring that he would give thought to their request; adding that he would not disappoint them.
“I thank you for the trust and confidence you repose in me. Testimonies have shown that APGA appreciates my contributions and sacrifices to the party. I am proud of this group, and I promise not to disappoint you.
“I want also to urge you not to limit your support to Victor Oye alone. I want you to extend your support to APGA generally; and to our governor, Obiano.
Our efforts and supports should gear towards seeing APGA existing beyond 2021 in Anambra. It is just two years to the next governorship election in Anambra. Therefore, after my own election, we shall join hands on the struggle for Obiano’s successor,” said Oye, who also assured that after his second tenure, he would hand over to a youth as national chairman.
