Commendations trail renovation of UNIZIK school hostels, lecture halls

Following the of hostels and other by the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state, have continued to greet the gesture as students return to campus after a long industrial action by lecturers.

Orient Campus Gist reports that the included fixing of toilet facilities, patching of walls, clearing of bushes around the hostels, installation of a borehole as well as the painting of the four walls of .

According to a student in the department of economics of the university, Joseph Nathan, “the hostel is looking more beautiful than it used to. Before now we perceived the odour from the male hostel toilets from our classroom but I’m currently here taking pictures with my friends behind the facility; this was formerly impossible. We are happy and proud as well.”

Florence Nweke, a senior executive officer at the female hostel, expressed happiness as well as gratitude to the dean of student affairs, Prof. Stan Udedi, and the authority for the renovation exercise.

She stated that it was an encouragement to them who work in the hostel as the environment had, once again, become conducive.

Asked how she would make sure that the environment stayed clean, she said, “if I see any student messing up the environment, I will punish the student by asking her to clean up the mess herself instead of the school cleaners.”

Similarly, the dean of student affairs, while thanking the vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, for buying into the vision, noted that the renovation of the hostels, especially the toilet, was pertinent for learning and health of students.

Udedi also said that the renovation would reduce funds spent at the school medical centre on sick patients as a result of putting an end to hazards that may emanate therein.

He added that the renovation started two years ago with the gradual fixing of internal faults before it got to those outside. He disclosed that a monitoring and evaluation body would be set up to ensure the proper management of the facilities as well as students.

The vice chancellor recommended that hostel masters and wardens be appointed for effective management of facilities in the hostel.

He promised that a solar panel would be installed in all the hostels for 24-hour power supply to aid reading and also improve the ambience of the university while commending the dean for the good job.

Orient Campus Gist reports that the vice chancellor also commissioned the footbridge linking the female and male hostels. A wooden plank footbridge used to serve the purpose for students.
