Ezeonu, who was one of the top contenders for the position of vice chancellor, also forwarded a congratulatory letter on behalf of the association to the vice chancellor of the institution.

Ezeonu, a professor of Environmental Biochemistry, who came 3rd in the screening process that involved 28 other professors from around the country, had personally felicitated with Prof. Esimone, Orient Education learnt.

In a press release signed by NAUAA Secretary-General, Ejiofo Umegbogu (JP), the association described the gesture by Prof. Ezeonu as a demonstration of integrity, while commending him for living up to the motor of university.

The release reads in part, “This is a radical departure from the past selection processes where bickering, protests and even litigations have characterised the appointment of vice chancellors of the university, and, indeed, most universities in Nigeria.

“A situation that had led to intense politicking and internal strife within the university community, leading to disruption of smooth academic activities.

“This gesture is an exceptional act of statesmanship, which should be emulated by every Nigerian, especially public office seekers.

“The National Executive Council, NEC, and entire members of Alumni Association, wish Prof. Esimone well in his new assignment, as he prepares to takeover from the outgoing vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, with effect from June 4, 2019.

“We are hopeful that Prof. Esimone would excel in his new appointment considering his record of achievements in other positions that he held in the past”.
