A former Chairman, of Polytechnics, Federal Polytechnic, Oko chapter, Anambra state, Comrade Godson Okeoma, has urged of the newly inaugurated 9th Assembly, Ahmed , to appoint Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, representing Kano Central as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education.

The said the call became imperative due to his unprecedented and outstanding achievements in education sector as a minister of education, permanent secretary in the ministry of education as well as two-term governor of Kano state.

Okeoma, who made this call in an exclusive interview with Orient Daily in his office, said that such move would help to give needed attention in the continued dwindling education sector.

He said that Shekarau’s antecedents as a teacher; Zonal Education Officer in the ministry of education; director, Planning and Statistics in the same ministry; permanent secretary in the ministry of education, among others, clearly distinguished his vision, remarking that as a governor, Shekarau accorded education enviable priority in his state’s annual budgets.

Describing him as -friendly, the former ASUP chairman recalled how Shekarau intervened in the over eleven months strike embarked upon by the members of Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in 2014, on assumption of office as the minister of education.

According to Okeoma, throughout his tenure as the minister of education, there was absolute industrial harmony in the education sector. As a governor, he made education free from primary to secondary level, especially for the girls, disabled and their children.

“I therefore call on to put a square peg in a square hole by appointing Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education. If done, this will bring stability, peace and progress in the education sector”, he stressed.
