The of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state, Prof. Charles Esimone, who was handed over the mantle of leadership as the 6th substantive of the university, said focus on promoting the highest standard of academic excellence, community service, administrative reforms, discipline and human capacity building.

The VC said create non-discriminatory, non-selective and meritorious research environment, where every researcher will be encouraged with grants to excel.

He said, “We will enthrone merit that will reflect in our promotion assessment criteria as we seek to encourage impact factored journals in every discipline. Students will be required to give feedbacks on every lecturer at the end of each semester. The main purpose is to discover teachers, who may need further training to be able to impart instudents using new pedagogy of learning that stresses on inclusive and flipped learning, where the lecturer is no longer the centre and emperor of the classroom.”

He promised to provide resources so that lectures are delivered using digital resources in line with transformative higher education pedagogy; to positively inculcate skills required in industries into students.

On measures to enforce discipline, he said, “We will introduce digital attendance register which will require biometric fingerprints for clocking in and out of work for staff, as well as for students to clock into the lecture halls.

“Productivity will be required of every staff, as non-performing staff will be declared redundant and could be shown the way out, if they did not turn a new leaf. Productivity bonus will not be mandatory for every staff, but foronly those who earn them.There will be zero tolerance to plagiarism, sexual harassment and inducement. A mechanism will be put in place to identify culprits and punish them accordingly”.

Esimone further promised to tackle the infrastructural deficit in the university, complete ongoing projects as well as make provision for new auditorium, senate building, ICT Centre, new classrooms, laboratories and offices. He also called for seamless cooperation of staff, students and other relevant stakeholders to take the university to enviable height within the next five years.

He thanked his predecessor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, for finding him worthy to be appointed as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for two terms under his watch, which, according to him, culminated intohis vice chancellorship position. He promised his administration would consolidate on the previous achievements of his predecessor.

Earlier, the out-gone vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku, described Esimone as the right man for the job, while expressing optimism that the chancellor would deliver on his mandates. He solicited support for the incoming vice chancellor to enable him pilot the affairs of the university creditably.

High points of the ceremony were prayer session led by the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Rev. Fr. Prof. Bonachristus Umeogu; as well as launch of a book, which chronicles the life and achievements of Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku during his five years tenure as vice chancellor.
