Biafra agitators have been urged to discard the idea of boycotting or disrupting the forthcoming general election and instead use their bloc vote to elect a president that would restructure the country’s federation and address the socio-economic and political challenges facing the country, especially the south east region.
An elder statesman and a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nwobu-Alor gave the advice when a political pressure group under the aegis of Atiku Presidency Project visited him at his office at Udoka Estate, Awka, to show their solidarity and support for Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign and his running mate, the former governor of Anambra state Mr. Peter Obi.
According to him, the 2019 presidential election is very crucial to the people of the region and those planning to disrupt it do not mean well for the people. “I want to appeal to them to desist from making any campaign that will stampede the integrity of Nigerian society particularly the Igbo people. Any Igbo man who refuses to vote is not worthy to be an Igbo”, he said.
He also cautioned against making inciting comments. “I am appealing to the people in south east Nigeria to think twice, make less hurtful statement, some of our statement are very hurtful. I cannot imagine the young men, people who tell everybody that there will be no election in south east”, he stressed.
On the ongoing quest for a sovereign state of Biafra, Nwobu-Alor argued that it would not be realised through election boycotting. According to him, “You cannot get what you are asking for without the government. If you want a separate state through a referendum, it is the state that will prepare the referendum. If you don’t have the government in place, do you give yourself referendum? It is not possible.”
According to him, voting for PDP presidential candidates – Atiku and Obi – remains the best bet the people of south east have at the moment towards actualising their dream. “Voting for the pair of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi can help realise their dreams. If there is need for referendum, these are the people who can help them to achieve it.
He went further. “We asked God for a saviour and he brought out Atiku and Peter Obi. In fact this is a wonderful match. Peter Obi is a sound economist, an achiever. He has masters in all aspect of human endeavour and Atiku has the same quality.
He urged the group and other well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind Atiku/Peter Obi presidential ticket. “Every reasonable Nigeria wants a change not the change Buhari gave us, which is negative change. We were not expecting a negative change but a positive one. We are going to see that change in its totality and that it is change from bad leadership to a positive and successful leadership.
