No fewer than six policemen deployed to Ezza North local government area last Saturday where electoral materials were burnt down by unidentified hoodlums have been arrested and detained by the Ebonyi state police command.
They were detained for allowing such unfortunate act to take place without arresting any of the suspects.
Orient Weekend gathered that few hours to the commencement of March 9th elections, one of the INEC Registration Area Centers (RAC), Community Secondary School Okposi Umuoghara polling unit 07,Ezza North local government area was set ablaze by unidentified gun men.
It was gathered that the hoodlums invaded the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC RAC at about 2:15 am and attacked the officials. Shoot sporadically scaring the people away before setting the center ablaze with INEC sensitive materials.
It was learnt that the command CP Awoshola Awotinde reported to the officer in charge of election monitoring in south East who ordered for the arrest and proper investigation of the incident which is seen as sabotage.
When contacted on the arrest, the police public relations officer ASP Loveth Odah confirmed the arrest and frowned at the unfortunate incident.
She said the officers were being tried on oath, that is they were subjected to in-house investigation and trail. That the way police is investigating the public is the way the officers deployed to the RAC with the Ad-hoc staff are being investigated.
She explained although that the police men in their statement said the hoodlums came in and off the generator set supplying the centre light which made it difficult for the police to confront the suspect to avoid shooting at an innocent Ad-hoc or INEC staff who were all a the centre.
She said investigation is still ongoing and the investigating team will submit their report to the command at the end but that the command was not happy on the fortunate incident.
