Ahead of the 2023 general elections, some big wigs under the aegis of Politicians in State have commenced gimmick to thwart and outsmart the plans of the governor of the state, Engr. David Umahi, in choosing his preferred successor.
The group, led by the senator representing Central Senatorial zone, Sen. Obinna Ogba, had their meeting in an undisclosed hotel in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Notable among those in attendance during the meeting were Sen. Obinna Ogba, Hon. Lazarus Ogbee, Hon. Elias Mbam, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Hon. Sylvester Ogbaga, Hon. Anayo Nwonu, Barr Kelechi Igwe, among others, all from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), except Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu of All Progressive Congress (APC) who is currently among the ministerial nominee of President Mohammad Buhari.
The group, through Ogba, maintained that, since the creation of the state in 1996, nobody who was elected or appointed to represent his people at level had ever succeeded as a governor of the state despite their roles in bringing smooth relationship between the state and the presidency and their individual leadership experience and capabilities.
Ogba insisted that, come 2023, the group would square up with anybody opponent to their quest.
Another speaker during the meeting was the member representing Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency, Hon. Sylvester Ogbaga who lamented that the Umahi led administration had not been giving any of the politicians the opportunity to nominate anybody to the state executive council, which according to him was a hatched plan to sideline them in the scheme of things in Ebonyi state.
He condemned Umahi, accusing him an attempt to foist someone from the state assembly on the state in 2023 and noting that the personalities from the group such as Ogba, Ogbe and himself were ready and capable of occupying the number one position in the state.
It could be recalled that fought against Dr Sam Egwu’s second tenure in 2003 unsuccessfully, but repositioned themselves, fought and succeeded against Chief Martin Elechi from foisting Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu who was the minister of health during Goodluck Jonathan administration, as his successor.
