Anambra Hos, Nocen Boss pay tribute to Ekwueme

All the who’s who in the Southeast and beyound were present at the commendation service of Late Dr. Alexander Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme which held at Ekwueme Square Awka, Anambra State capital and some of them shared with O’Star Eze of Orient Daily their parting thoughts for the deceased

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Alhaji Shehu Shagari, former of Nigeria 1979-1983

understood each other well and it was impossible for mischief makers to drive a wedge between us. He was a loyal lieutenant and because of his excellent contributions to the success of our administration during our first tenure, I had no hesitation to nominate him to run with me again for second term.

He has served Nigeria diligently. He has done his bit. In life, he was a great man; a patriot; a statesman. Even in death, his many achievements and greatness cannot be diminished. I will continue to relish the memory of the good times we shared together.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Ekwueme contributed immensely to Ndigbo during the civil war and was also a front-line agitator for restructuring of Nigeria which the is trying to align with now. In education, he attained the greatest level.

Ekwueme’s selflessness stood him out in the ’s politics. He displayed an uncommon level of integrity by remaining in the People’s Democratic Party after losing the party’s presidential ticket in 1999. Truth be told, not many politicians will lose the presidential ticket of a party they helped to build and keep their cool. When many expected him to be bitter, he still worked for (Olusegun) Obasanjo’s victory in the election.”

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former vice president (1999-2007)

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Dr. Alex Ekwueme was a fountain of knowledge and intellect. He was one man who became a rallying point in the constitutional conference even though we also disagreed. I was one of those who disagreed with him on the restructuring of the country on the basis of geopolitical zones. He died at a time Nigeria needed his fountain of knowledge and intellect.

Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, of Enugu

Ekwueme’s legacies will become a beacon to the Igbo and Nigeria. His humility and integrity are worthy of emulation and we will learn from his steps in leadership.

Engineer David Umahi, Ebonyi and chairman, South East Governors Forum

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Ekwueme’s contributions to national development, even after his presidential aspiration was aborted in 1999 showed that Nigeria would have been better off if he had become the country’s President. He was the best President Nigeria never had; from all his contributions it was clear that Nigeria would have been a better country if he had become the president. His contributions after 1999 stood him out, even when he was denied the presidential ticket of the People’s Democratic Party, he continued charting a better course for Nigeria. In his last interview before he died, he parted with the words, Nigeria must be restructured.

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Ekwueme started from the local government level to climb the rungs of politics, as a community builder and philanthropist and quintessential politician, up to the vice-presidency level. He was a dear friend who was always there at the highpoints of my priesthood and personal life. We were close neighbours, I coming from Nanka and him from Oko. He continued to fight for the unity of this country. I thank God for the many good things he was able to do for Nigerians and Nigeria.

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

For the first time in Nigeria, we are seeing in late Ekwueme, someone who went into politics and came out poorer than he was before he went in. He was one of the things that made him outstanding among his peers.

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Nigeria lost a great man, a great patriot, a complete politician, highly cerebral educationist, legal luminary, very accomplished architect, a father, mentor and role model to the core. We learnt a lot from late Ekwueme.

Willie Obiano, governor of Anambra state

Tributes to Alex Ekwueme - ekwueme, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, Anambra State, Alex Ekwueme

Ekwueme’s name should go down as a pillar of modern Nigeria, he insisted that Nigeria should come first in all his dealings while alive and that was why he never resigned to fate when he was betrayed at Jos in 1999. We have lost a foremost thinker and philosopher, a beacon of modern Nigeria and that is why I am urging all of us to celebrate the life and time of the great sage, rather than mourn his demise

Ekwueme was a very close friend of the family who became a father to us when Azikiwe passed on. He was a great nationalist and father to Nigeria who always put Nigeria first in all his dealings. He was an honest and peaceful man, who despite disappointments, kept on fighting for the greater good of the nation.

Growing up, I saw all the good that Ekwueme kept doing for his people and Nigerians in general. He made a lot of impact as an architect, a lover of education and a good politician. Ekwueme is a role model and hero of all times. As a former vice president, we politicians looked up to while we grew up. The fact that he bears the same Igbo name “Ifeanyichukwu” with me made him somewhat an inspiration to me; and I always look up to him.
